Clear, healthy, and youthful skin is the goal for many adult men and women who visit Coastal Aesthetics of Wilmington, North Carolina. At our practice, we understand that your appearance impacts more than just the way you look—it impacts the way you feel! You can achieve healthy and glowing skin with various treatments, such as chemical peels. Below are just some of the frequently asked questions about chemical peel treatments.
According to Theresa Hoffman and her team, a chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure in which a solution is applied to the hands, face, or neck to exfoliate and eliminate the outermost layers of skin. This process stimulates cell turnover and reveals new, healthy skin cells for a smoother and brighter complexion.
Several types of peels, including the VI peel, might be recommended to our patients. They range from superficial to deep. Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and beta hydroxy acid (BHA) are mild acids used in superficial peels to gently exfoliate the skin’s surface and enhance its overall texture. Medium peels use stronger acids, such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA), which penetrate deeper into the skin for more significant results. Deep peels, which use phenol or high concentrations of TCA, are reserved for severe skin concerns.
Most patients report mild discomfort during a chemical peel treatment, though this depends on the chemical peel’s strength. Patients may experience a tingling or stinging during the procedure, but this usually goes away quickly after Theresa Hoffman and her team take every precaution to ensure our patients are comfortable.
The type and intensity of the chemical peel affect the recovery time. The actual recovery period for superficial peels is typically minimal, whereas medium and deep peels may take a few days to weeks. To promote proper healing, it is critical that patients closely follow the post-treatment care instructions recommended by their provider.
